In the Beginning
Blessed with a textbook upbringing, eating anything I wanted, I always thought I was healthy. Scored my drivers licence first go and looking back now, laziness and complacency crept in. Married twenty years on, and self employed, I settled into a cruzy lifestyle that caught up with me 11pm Dec 1st, 2012.
Years of Yo yo dieting, forty kilos overweight, and combined with an undiagnosed back injury, I settled in for bed that night. In excruciating pain, my back went to town on me. Earthquakes, fireworks, rock’n roll! Just moving a finger triggered severe muscle spasms. Over a two hour period, my wife crammed eight painkillers into me, finally my back muscles popped and relaxed as they retreated from protecting my three damaged thoracic vertebrae discs unbeknown to me.
Achieving a diagnosis took a few months of Neurosurgeon, Endrochronology, X-ray, bone scans, and MRI’s, uncovering a previous fracture and several disc cartilage degeneration. For five years I managed to get out of bed each morning pain free and; always placing other’s first, I just dealt with, and adapted from the discomfort until that night. They say I presented with Adult Onset Scheuermann’s Disease-like complications, a 25% curvature and three compressed discs. There were a few other terms they use but as of that moment, I took total ownership it was my fault and up to me to do something about it.
We’re a pretty resilient lot, and I now know how the human body is such a wonderful machine that given the right tools, can all but repair itself. My GP had no option other than to prescribe 12 painkillers a day until I figured out myself what I had to do. I felt like Superman when drugged up, but the pain heightened when I backed off the medication. Months of beneficial Chiropractic un-rusted my spine, but going backwards fast, had me taking more painkillers hours before an adjustment or the next round of scans. I remember popping even more pills on top of my morning dose before a double MRI, but I don’t remember driving there. That’s Scary!
My Ah Ha Moment
I’d been fiddling around with nutrition for a month and one day it finally clicked.
Cold turkey, I kicked the painkillers, diet soft drinks, party food, six o’clock beer. There were months of severe pain, back braces, heat packs, daily decompressing, having to be helped from the table. Not being able to pound the pavement or the gym, I swam daily to strengthen my back muscles, vividly remembering the times swimming as my back spasmed, taking big gulps of chlorine, stopping and starting lap by lap.
January 2015 now eighteen months on, and drug free for sixteen, leaves me with a few sleeping discomforts but I’m totally spoiling myself with weekly specialised massages. Finally placing myself first and nurturing my body with the most nutritious foods I could find has done the trick. As the saying goes “you are what you eat” couldn’t be more closer to the truth. All I had was food to fix my health.
I reached out to and continue to learn from the best health and wellness minds in Australia and from around the world. They’re an amazing group of people. They’ve welcomed me along their journeys and; their combined expertise and passion has blown me away. I’m swamped daily with healthy correspondence they just share and more keep coming.
I can’t offer them health knowledge, but I sure can repay by applying their tools, and deliver fair dinkum results. That’s what floats their boats!
I’m studying nutrition towards a career in Health and Wellness. As every day passes I’m feeling better, healthier, stronger, younger and oh; it’s been nearly 2 years, my life’s back on track and I’ve almost shed 50 kg’s. It’s an ongoing life journey that anyone can start today.
